Appointed to Att General’s Domestic Violence Task Force

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

I am very honored and just thrilled to be appointed to the MO Attorney General Chris Koster’s Domestic Violence Task Force.

The object is to take a good hard look at the state’s various laws regarding domestic violence & sexual abuse – something that has NOT been accomplished in over 30 years.  The task will be to examine current laws and identify potential legislation that will best protect victims of domestic violence.

Koster is inviting representatives of groups involved in the domestic violence-protection system, including survivors, law enforcement, prosecutors, victims’ advocates, and probation and parole and court officials, to review the laws and their practices, and to suggest changes needed to improve the system.

The task force will meet in St. Louis Sept. 7th, in Columbia on Sept. 2oth and in Kansas City on Sept. 27th.

I currently sponsor HB 1958 – which would allow law enforcement to remove a firearm during a domestic violence incident.  Only 18 states have passed similiar bills.  I have worked on this legislation since 2003 and will continue – with the help of law enforcement, prosecutors and judges.

Stay tuned for updates on our work.
