MO Youth Empowerment Summit – Columbia

I was thrilled to participate in the Missouri Youth Empowerment Summit hosted by the University of Missouri and the statewide Safe Schools Coalition (a project of PROMO Fund) in November in Columbia.

About one hundred high school and college age students spent a day connecting and designing strategies for empowerment in their schools and communities.

I presented an advocacy/lobbying workshop – “Bringing Your Story to the State Capitol” – targeting the Missouri Safe Schools Improvement Act which includes specific protections for students based on sexual orientation and gender identity.  The student’s enthusiasm was infectious!

Stay tuned – we are hopeful that the Safe Schools Act will make it to the House floor for serious consideration this next session.  The newly trained activists are ready to make that happen – to help protect students throughout Missouri and save teenage lives.
